Life and Death.

The stream of Ganges was crystal clear at Rishikesh. he walked down the steps of the ghat, he was in a cotton white loin cloth and a saffron vest.
The moisture laden wind penetrated the leaves of deodar trees, creating a shrill sound. The black, grey, and white stones on the bank were glossy, being washed by stream. The sky shone in luminous grey colour, with stars in white and pale colours.
He dipped his feet into cold water and descended the slope till he was waist deep in water. A few sadhus reciting Upanishads slokas, on the other bank about fifty yards away.
‘Asato mā sadgamaya,
tamaso mā jyotirgamaya,
mṛtyormā’mṛtaṃ gamaya.’
He closed his nostrils with the thumb and the index finger of his right hand, lowered himself on his haunches till his head was fully immersed in water. After two minutes, he took out his head and torso. The water dripped from his hair to his face, shoulders, chest, and the waist before mixing with the stream. He breathed in and out a few times to catch up his breath, then he stood straight and pressed his palms together at an upward angle, in front of his chest, closed his eyes to worship his Lord, ‘Ram, Ram….’
He shivered due to the cold breeze, which blew over his wet body, he raised his head to look at the sky. The reflection of the moon and the stars shimmered on the stream. The pristine beauty of the nature- the cascading water, the trees behind the opposite bank, the rhythm of the slokas, created in him a feeling of communion with his own past. He spoke the words profoundly, ‘The wheel of Time!’
He considered himself to be part of the five elements of Life -water, earth, air, fire, and space. His body was made of the same five elements, it had originated from those and shall finally merge into it, he was not afraid of death.
He believed in Indian mythology that the river Ganges originated from Jatayu of Lord shiva from Bhagirathi at Kailas Mountain in Himalayas and flew down the slopes, the planes covering a stretch of thousands of miles, finally to join the ocean…..
